From Good Morning, Mr. Orwell to a Cross-City Real-Time Signal Experiment

In 1984, Nam June Paik launched the satellite television work *Good Morning, Mr. Orwell *.

In the year when Orwellian surveillance was at its peak, he did not view television merely as a tool of control, but transformed it into a real-time connection spanning cities, cultures, and media: New York, Paris, music, images, performance, and television signals all collided simultaneously.

More than 40 years later, we face a different kind of network. It is faster, yet more fragmented. It connects everything, yet swallows up many live experiences. Every day we livestream, scroll, sync, and repost, yet we rarely truly feel that we are “present” alongside people far away.

Shù aims to address this issue by conducting a small but authentic remote live experiment.

This June, “Shù” will launch < Branching Signals>, a collaborative event featuring remote live coding, live painting, and experimental sound, connecting the city nodes of Chiang Mai, Seoul, Mexicali, Yogyakarta, Shanghai, Bangkok, Gwangju, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and potentially more cities that may join.

Each city is a branch. Each venue has its own sounds, images, audience, and atmosphere. Through the internet, they will generate a shared signal at the same moment. This event is supported by 706, hechyeomoyeo and toplap mexico, toplap seoul communities

What is Branching Signals?

A series of workshops 6/17

The workshops will start with the basics of live creation, helping you understand how code becomes rhythm, how sound is rewritten on the spot, and how visuals are continuously generated through input and feedback. You don’t need a background in programming, nor do you need to know anything about electronic music; as long as you’re interested in sound, images, AI, code, or live creation, you’re welcome to join.

Several Jam Performances 6/20

During the performance, artists will generate sound through code and create visuals using real-time painting, video, or visual tools. The audience will witness not a finished piece, but an unfolding process: as code is typed, sounds begin to shift, images gradually take shape, and live performances across different cities respond to one another.
