Previous program by Shù called "The Branching Signal” in 2026

In August 2026, Shù and 706 Community will collaborate to organize four live coding workshops within a program called “Living Cloud” in four cities: Berlin, Melbourne, Shanghai, and Xiamen.

Living Cloud is a live coding knowledge-sharing program by Shù, where live coder artists are invited as tutors to share their knowledge in live coding ranging from basic to advanced stages, following their own personal artistic practices. Imagining the individual and the shared knowledge as a living cloud, where people could perceive and embrace all possible knowledge that they could absorb, through offline or online interaction.

In this current series, the Living Cloud program is sponsored by the 706 Community, and all the selected venue spaces where the workshop will take place are part of the 706 Community nodes in all four cities.

Inspired by the previous two workshops of Shù at 706 Shanghai from “The Branching Signal” program, Living Cloud is our next step in exposing and promoting the art of live coding practice to the world.

Living Clouds and Knowledge-Sharing

Shù, in collaboration with the local nodes of 706 Community in each of the selected four cities, is inviting four live coders as tutors to share their knowledge of live coding on each workshop session.

This will be an entry point for the workshop participants who are interested in experiencing the joy of live coding practice or involving live coding as their creative practice within their own further artistic development.

Code, sound, visuals, and conversations will continuously intersect throughout the events. Participants can either engage in the process of creating works or explore the basic tools of live coding and real-time audiovisual creation through workshops.

**Tutor:**Alexandra Cárdenas

Alexandra Cárdenas is a Colombian composer, live coder, and sound artist based in Berlin. Since 1997, she has developed a practice combining composition, improvisation, and electronic music. Her work explores the musicality of code through performances, installations, and collaborative projects, primarily using the open-source environments TidalCycles and SuperCollider. A long-standing member of the international Live Coding and Algorave communities, she has performed and taught at festivals, universities, museums, and cultural spaces around the world. Alexandra co-founded TOPLAP Mexico and TOPLAP Berlin and has supported the growth of live coding communities through workshops, events, and educational initiatives. Her teaching focuses on making creative coding accessible and helping participants develop their own musical voice through code.

About Workshop:

In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore live coding as a musical practice and learn how code can become an instrument for composition and improvisation. Using Strudel, a browser-based live coding environment, we will create rhythmic and melodic patterns, transform them in real time, and experiment with repetition, variation, density, and structure.

The focus will be on learning the basic language while also listening, making musical decisions, and developing ideas through experimentation. Participants will discover how a few lines of code can generate complex musical results and how patterns can be changed while the music continues to play.

The workshop is suitable for beginners, and no previous experience with live coding is required. Participants with coding or musical experience are also welcome.
